Building a Culture of Business Development: Part 1: Why Should You Care?

What are the characteristics of strong company culture? Strong employee retention, minimal office politics, and a collaborative work environment are just a few things you might think of when picturing a company with a strong culture. These factors are each critical to the success of any business, but there’s one factor we’d like to spotlight in this two-part blog series: an emphasis on business development.  Yes, business development can help build a strong culture and that’s something to care about.

Think about it. Everyone on your team has a network, whether it's their given, social, or business network. There’s a big opportunity for many companies to tap into those networks, drive more new relationships in the organization and positively engage your team. Building a business development culture at your organization can also be a substantial competitive advantage. Imagine if you were able tap into just 25% more of your team members to bring in new leads and new relationships. How would that impact your bottom line? So here are a few key reasons why we think you should care about promoting a culture of business development in 2022.

  • Give employees a purpose. One of my favorite leadership books is Drive by Daniel Pink, and one of his main points to motivating your team is giving them purpose. By developing a culture of business development, companies can provide their staff members more purpose by showing them that their efforts (business development) can help grow the company and unify everyone around one purpose: Growth.

  • Engaged Employees. Having a business development culture shows your team that their connections are genuinely helping drive the company forward. Giving them training, recognition, and rewards will inspire them to work collaboratively to reach your company's financial goals.

  • Everyone Wins. With the right plan, developing a business development culture will increase top-of-the-funnel leads creating more opportunities for your sales team while giving all your employees invaluable skills (and the chance to earn more money themselves) that they can use for the rest of their lives.

  • Sharpen Employee Skills. Another advantage that comes along with a business development culture is giving your team members the resources and training they need to be effective. Building a network, developing relationships, networking, referral, and content strategy are all tools that everyone can learn. Even just the basics in these subjects can be transformative.
